Frequently Asked Questions
-
Schedule a complimentary 15-minute consultation with Dr. Liz Gustafson or Dr. Alisa Powers. We’ll talk about what you’re looking for, answer your questions, and discuss which service may be a good fit.
-
Dr. Gustafson primarily works with adults, while Dr. Powers specializes in children, adolescents, and families. If you’re unsure where to start, the consultation is a chance to talk through what you’re looking for and decide on a next step.
-
You don’t need to have a diagnosis or a clear treatment goal before contacting us. In the consultation, we can talk through what’s been difficult and whether individual therapy, a group, or parenting support might be a useful place to start.
Getting Started
-
Yes. Dr. Gustafson and Dr. Powers both offer in-person sessions on the Upper West Side of Manhattan. Dr. Gustafson also offers virtual sessions to clients in New York, California, and Florida. Dr. Powers offers virtual sessions to clients in New York and Connecticut.
-
Sessions are typically weekly. Individual sessions are 45 minutes, and group sessions are 60 minutes.
-
The first session is a chance to talk about what brings you in and begin getting to know your therapist. Together, you’ll start to make sense of what’s been happening and what you’d like to work on.
It’s also time to begin building the trust and connection that make the deeper work possible.
Sessions & Location
-
No. Many people come to us because of our experience with ADHD, but others are referred by colleagues or reach out because something about our approach feels like a good fit.
You’re welcome to contact us whether or not you have an ADHD diagnosis. We can talk about what’s bringing you in and whether we’re the right fit for you.
-
Yes. Adults come to therapy for many reasons, including anxiety, depression, relationship difficulties, life transitions, and feeling stuck in patterns they want to change. Children and adolescents may need support with emotions, behavior, friendships, family relationships, or challenges at school. We also work with people exploring autism, AuDHD, and other forms of neurodivergence. You don’t need to know exactly how to describe what’s going on before reaching out.
-
Yes. We offer diagnostic evaluations to determine whether ADHD is present and provide recommendations for treatment and support. These are focused ADHD evaluations rather than comprehensive neuropsychological assessments.
If you’re looking for testing for a particular purpose, please contact us to discuss whether our evaluation would meet your needs.
-
We do not prescribe medication, but we can recommend prescribing providers we work with frequently.
If you choose to pursue medication, we can collaborate with your provider to help coordinate your care.
Who We Help
Fees & Policies
-
Active Minds Psychology is a private-pay, out-of-network practice. We do not bill insurance directly.
-
If your plan includes out-of-network mental health benefits, you may be able to submit a claim for reimbursement. Superbills are available through our client portal. Your insurance company can tell you what your plan covers and what you may be responsible for paying.
-
For individual therapy, we ask for at least 48 hours’ notice if you need to cancel. If we’re able to reschedule your appointment within the same week, there is no additional charge.
Once you enroll in a group, you are responsible for the session fee each week the group is held, including weeks you’re unable to attend.
